Brewers Island, Maryland, United States

January 9, 2011

Just 300 yards from shore, Brewer’s Island is a property with a past. The title deed dates back to the Brewer family in 1743 and Brewer’s Island is rumored to have been a refuge for escaping slaves pre-Civil War. Today, Brewer’s remains a place of refuge — but one with the conveniences of modern life; such as electricity and telephone. High-speed cable is available. Water and septic systems are in place on-island. In addition to an island with two homes, this property also includes an undeveloped waterfront parcel with a boat shed and pier.

Brewer’s Island is a rarity among US islands; the owner of this discreet property can easily commute to downtown Baltimore (20 minutes), Annapolis (25 minutes), downtown D.C. (40 minutes) or to Baltimore-Washington Airport (10 minutes). One can also powerboat directly into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in just 35 minutes.

The island sits on quiet Marley Creek, a little used waterway that leads to the Chesapeake Bay. Despite proximity to habitation, privacy is not an issue. One side of the creek has homes and a small marina — cloaked for nine months a year by trees. The other side is almost completely undeveloped and gives the impression of being in the Berkshires or Maine.
