DIY: Color Palette Inspiration Ideas
January 26, 2011
For some, choosing what colors to surround themselves in their home is as easy as breathing. For others, it’s an anxious-producing decision that seems impossible to make. Here are five places to get color palette inspiration for your home (or just a room!):
Your favorite piece of art You picked that piece of art for a reason. Maybe you liked the colors. Maybe you thought the subject matter was funny. Maybe you’ve just had it so long you can’t imagine living without it. Whatever the case, chances are you’ve got some colors in there you can play with.
A cool piece of fabric Same sort of case with the art. This could be fabric on a cool pillow you like, on a chair you picked up at a thrift store, or some random piece of fabric you bought once when you fancied yourself a crafter. Grab a few colors from the sample and play around with which colors would be the primary color.
Nature Do you love where you live? Do you gasp in awe every time you walk out your door? Or maybe you went on a vacation once that had the most jaw-dropping landscapes that the photos to this day give you a rush of excitement? The best part of grabbing color palettes from a photo of a natural setting you really love is that nature hardly ever clashes, and will give you an earthy, fun interior environment.
A favorite outfit Are you one of those people that knows how to dress themselves but feels clueless when it comes to dressing your home? Take a note from your wardrobe and grab a few pieces that you adore—the colors you gravitate toward in your clothes just might be the right colors for a home color palette.
Your favorite architecture How perfect would a color palette for your home be if came from one of your favorite architectural structures? Could be a modernist commercial building, a famous Frank Lloyd Wright home, or it could be the graffiti off a run-down shack in your neighborhood. Any way you’d have a fun story to tell when someone asked where the inspiration for your home’s color palette came from.
